What is Red Dot Fundamentals?

If you want to learn, practice, and become proficient in your red dot pistol shooting skills, this is the class for you. 

Red Dot Fundamentals is a 6-hour class that will help students who are new to shooting with a red dot optic gain a solid understanding of how to find the dot and accurately shoot their red dot pistol.

Red Dot Fundamentals is NOT an introductory pistol class for new students. To participate in this class, you must have completed the prerequisite training, Pistol Self-Defense Fundamentals which you can learn more about Here.

  • How to zero your red dot
  • How to quickly acquire the red dot without “hunting” for it
  • How to accurately shoot red dots at varying distances
  • How to accurately shoot red dots while moving at engaging multiple targets
  • How to improve your red dot skills on your own
  • During this class, students will also have the opportunity to compete for the coveted, Valortec Alumni patch.

What firearm, ammo, and gear will I need for this class?

  • Successful completion of Pistol Self-Defense Fundamentals
  • Valid driver’s license or government issue ID
  • Semi-automatic pistol in one of the following calibers: .22LR, .380, 9MM, .40S&W, or .45ACP (No revolvers, pocket pistols, or compact handguns allowed)
  • Slide-mounted optic of your choice
  • 250 to 300 rounds of ammunition
  • OWB (Outside the Waistband) holster for your pistol
  • 3 magazines (Minimum)
  • Pistol magazine holster
  • Comfortable, closed-toe, sturdy shoes. No sandals or open-toed shoes.
  • Sturdy belt (must be able to hold up the weight of a pistol and magazine holster)
  • Eye and ear protection
  • Barrel Safety Plug (if not available, we can provide one)
  • Water & snacks (for the duration of the class)

Where is this class held and how long is it?

This class is held at Volusia County Gun & Hunt Club, a private outdoor gun range offering 11 pistol bays, and a variety of rifle ranges, up to 1,500 yards. Red Dot Fundamentals is a total of 6 hours.
